Beware of Posers on Facebook

It's fun to connect on social media websites like facebook and even to expand your network to new friends and faces, but beware. Not all friend requests are actually people you know. Recently released warnings tell consumers to be wary of questionable communications on facebook and other social media sites. As it turns out, scammers are using social media to steal personal information in a similar fashion to the old email scam of requesting personal information. A fake facebook friend, or "poser" will attempt to hack into another person’s facebook account, possibly by posing as a "friend." Once on the person's account, they will send out appeals for help or charitable donations. Usually there’s a story about traveling in a foreign country, losing their money or having it stolen and needing a "friend" to wire funds ASAP.

Things to watch for when you’re using social media:

  • Links to another website and
invitations from "friends" to go to
    that page.
  • Requests to download a new
    program like Flash Player.
  • Requests to paste a code or
unknown URL into a new browser
    window.
  • Requests for personal information
    like your social security number,
    birth date or bank information.

Is Your "Free" Checking Really Free?

Many banks and financial institutions offer "free" checking accounts. But when you look closer, you'll find that they're not really free.

  • Opening Balance - Just to OPEN a checking account, you need a minimum deposit ranging from $25 (PNC, Bank of America) to $100 (Wachovia, Citibank). With the Credit Union, all you need is your $5 minimum in your Share Savings Account.
  • Monthly Maintenance Fees - Many banks will charge you a monthly maintenance fee if you don't maintain a minimum balance, even with their "free" or basic checking products. We don't!
  • ATM Fees - Even if the ATM you're using doesn't carry a surcharge, you could still be charged a fee by your bank. Some banks limit the number of your ATM and PINbased transactions on a monthly basis and charge extra for exceeding that limit. We don't!

Before you open a checking account, make sure to do your homework. Allentown FCU's Checking Account is absolutely FREE. Switch your checking account to us today and start saving money! We've made it easy for you to make the switch.
